Often unseen, ADHD is nonetheless very real. In fact, it’s one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders that children experience. For your child, living with ADHD can make it challenging for them to do well in school, manage their emotions, and have positive self-esteem. It’s never easy to see them struggle, and you may be left unsure of how to help them cope. Medications are the main method of treatment for children with ADHD, but those can come with unwelcome side effects like anxiety, headaches, disrupted sleep, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, and many others.

If you’re searching for a more natural approach, we’re here to help. We use our decades of clinical experience and state-of-the-art technology to treat your child’s ADHD at the source: their brain. Our holistic and scientific approach restores the brain’s electrical and chemical balance, improves concentration, and eliminates your child’s need for medication.

What is ADHD in Children?

Characterized by impulsive behavior, restlessness, and an inability to focus, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder affects nearly 10 percent of children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most diagnosed cases of ADHD are in children older than six years, and 6 in 10 children have at least one other mental, emotional, or behavioral problem. ADHD can be challenging for children and parents alike, potentially leading to chronic and disruptive behaviors at home and in school.

What are the Types of ADHD?

ADHD isn’t just one brain-based condition; there are three types of ADHD that are determined by the degree to which a child is inattentive or hyperactive. In the past, ADD and ADHD were considered different conditions, but now all attention deficit disorders fall under the ADHD umbrella. The three types of ADHD are:

  • Inattentive ADHD
    • Previously known as ADD, children with inattentive type ADHD are easily sidetracked, forgetful, or disorganized, and often don’t appear to listen when spoken to. Children with this type of ADHD may seem shy or withdrawn.
  • Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD
    • Children who constantly interrupt others, have trouble waiting their turn, and are always squirming or fidgeting may have this type of ADHD.
  • Combined Type ADHD
    • Those with this type of ADHD exhibit persistent inattentive and hyperactive or impulsive behaviors.

What are the Signs of ADHD in a Child?

Although it’s normal for children to be restless and impulsive, an ADHD diagnosis is made when a child repeatedly exhibits a significant number of the following behaviors:

  • Difficulty following simple directions or completing tasks
  • Making careless mistakes or forgetting daily activities
  • Losing things or frequently daydreaming
  • Squirming or fidgeting
  • Impulsivity and risk-taking behavior
  • Difficulty sitting still or waiting for their turn

If he or she is displaying these behaviors and they are interfering with their ability to function well at home, in school, or socially, you should have your child evaluated for underlying function issues in the brain that can successfully be treated without medication.

In extreme situations, medication may be necessary for ADHD treatment as a short-term intervention only. But, if you as a parent are fearful of the impact that long-term medication can have on your child’s quality of life, there are other options.

How We Treat ADHD in Children

At Unique Mind Care, we base our ADHD treatments on decades of clinical research and state-of-the-art technology we use to create personalized protocols for every patient. Instead of treating the symptoms, we work to address the underlying causes of your child’s ADHD from a holistic brain health perspective.

The first step in our treatment plan is a complete diagnostic intake assessment. This ensures an accurate diagnosis while also identifying the underlying cause of your child’s health challenges. Our diagnostic and testing process includes a complete two-stage 3-D QEEG, a digital auditory and visual evaluation, and a complete symptom review and evaluation with the parent and child. Unlike other brain health centers in Houston, we complete all our testing and clinical reviews in-house. After all our findings are reviewed by our neuroscientists, we create a treatment plan specific to your child’s needs. This typically includes:

  • Nexalin Therapy – Non-invasive and free of any side effects, Nexalin therapy is a frequency-based waveform that stimulates the hypothalamus and surrounding deep centers of the brain. Cleared by the FDA, Nexalin will help your child better by recreating pathways and functions in their brain, enabling it to heal itself over time. Additionally, Nexalin supports the LORETA protocols for enhanced response to treatment.
  • LORETA Neurofeedback Therapy – All LORETA protocols are designed in-house by our licensed Ph. D Neuroscientists. Our LORETA neurofeedback therapy uses the most advanced technology currently available to promote and sustain healthy brain wave patterns in your child’s brain. With more than 30 years of experience, we are the most advanced provider of neurofeedback therapy in Houston.
  • Neurotransmitter Testing – Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers in your child’s brain that it can’t function without. Their job is to carry electrical signals (EEG) from one neuron to the next. This chemical system is vital to a healthy functioning brain. We test and analyze the major neurotransmitters in the brain during treatment. After testing, we provide a complete evaluation and report with a Nutraceutical supplement plan to ensure all treatment outcomes are long lasting and complete.
  • Additional Support – Healthy nutrition is critical to your child’s brain health. The brain is connected to a whole-body health system, which is why we also offer nutritional analysis and food sensitivity testing, personal coaching, supplements, and enzyme recommendations to improve long-term outcomes.

Coping with ADHD isn’t easy, but you don’t have to rely on medication to get your child the relief he or she deserves. By treating the issue at its source instead of managing the symptoms, we help provide long-term healing that will help you manage your child’s ADHD.

When you’re ready to try an alternative ADHD treatment plan created for your child’s unique needs, we’re here to help. Give us a call or make your first appointment today.
